yesterday, after ramona’s nap, the three of us got all dolled up and headed to a special free day at the clyfford still museum. ramona loved the tall ceilings and big rooms and we followed her closely to make sure she didn’t get too close to the beautiful canvases. she was none too thrilled when we whisked her away for some pints and half crisps at pints pub. until she tried a crisp. and then she was in heaven — a girl after her father’s anglophile heart. then we dropped ramona off at our friends’ house so jp and i could have a date night at noble swine supper club. jp and i were half of the original partners of this underground denver supper club but haven’t been involved in over two years. it was really fun to be at it again, but this time dining instead of cooking or serving. our friends do really amazing things, especially for the denver food scene!
dear ramona,
you, outside, messy knees, mussy hair, full diaper, with your best friend, exploring, giving kisses to the goats through the fence, chasing tail feathers. these are the best afternoons.
i love you. love, mama.

jp and i got to go to san francisco for four days and SANS baby! it was so nice to be w my love (and not have to wrangle a toddler or worry about nap times etc). big bummer though: the two of us were sick w the flu (or some weird GI thing) that ramona gave us. blech. our plans of eating and drinking ourselves into a stupor were laid to the side as we tried to take it easy, heal, and stomach what we could.
it may be because we were both down and out and feeling incredibly crappy, but i was not as in love with san fran as i thought i would be. it just didn’t seem to have that magic that chicago and NY certainly have. but criticisms aside, jp and i got to experience many cool things that we remember fondly:
- oysters via hog island
- oyster picnic off of highway 1
- burma superstar in oakland.
- blue bottle coffee in the ferry building (and then again the next day at the heath ceramics factory)
- burritos at el farolito on mission
- nap at dolores park
- dinner at state bird provisions
- morning hike at corona heights park
- trying almost one of everything at tartine bakery.
- lunch at zuni cafe
- shopping at temescal alley (i brought home the most beautiful, made-in-san-fran, 100% silk tunic from ali golden!)
we stayed with our friends in oakland and we both really loved that funny little city. travels are always best when you are with locals whom you enjoy.
and being away from ramona for so long?! it went terrific and i would do it again in a heartbeat if our budget allowed. she’s got such good people looking after her when we’re gone, and i’ve got places to see and lovey time with my husband to be had! i don’t love being away from her, but it sure was and is a luxury/blessing of life to be able to take off for some place and know my daughter is in completely loving and caring hands.
i’ve been remiss in posting my weekly portrait of ramona due to our trip to san francisco and general life-craziness. this is a photo taken while she was with one of her favorite people: koan (who, along w lashley, looked after her while we were away). a “selfie” if you will (she took it on his phone).

after a full day’s work and a full face of day-old lotion and sunscreen and make-up, it’s time to get my face squeaky clean for a good night’s sleep. typically, nighttime routines should be more intense than washing your face in the morning (i use facial bar soap and daily scrub in the AM, but often people just splash w water or use face wipes. whatever works!) bc there’s typically a lot more gunk on there. the above items are what i use (or really want to have to be able to use!).
clockwise from left
- i start with origins clean energy gentle cleansing oil. i rub it all over my dry face and this helps to loosen and remove make-up. then i rinse w warm water.
- after that, i wash my face with luvalla hydrating milk cleanser with a facial sea sponge. an esthetician from ten thousand waves introduced me to it and said that it would work great on my larger pores. it’s sold at whole foods in santa fe, but in denver i have to order it online.
- the next two items, the neutrogena fresh foaming cleanser and the clarisonic mia, are not items i own. however, i’ve used them w great results in the past (my mom got a mia for christmas and i tried to sneak it home with me). i’d use these products together on nights when i’ve worn more make-up than usual (nights out or at the restaurant) or days spent digging in the dirt or caked in sunscreen and sand at the beach.
- repeats i use morning and night are the thayers rose petal witch hazel toner and clinique all about eyes.
- and then finally, my miracle stuff: tilvee age-defying creme w argan & sea buckthorn (made locally in golden, co). this stuff is luxurious and smells great and a little goes a long way. if i didn’t need sunscreen on a daily basis, this would be my night and day moisturizer.
what’s your nighttime routine? any products you swear by?
