A Denver Home Companion | where's walrus?A Denver Home Companion | where's walrus?

we love the denver library. we are dedicated library-goers. so many books at your fingertips! and denver’s library system (and most library programs in urban centers fro my experience) has great online resources for putting books on hold, keeping track of books-to-be-read, e-books, and calendars for free activities. ramona loves the library bc it has chairs that look like animals and she lugs them around from book bin to book bin. she’s not too interested in the books until we take them home. i usually just grab the nicest looking book on the shelf (who ever said you can’t judge a book by it’s cover?). one of these recent impulse grabs was where’s walrus?

a walrus escapes the zoo during nap time and proceeds to explore the city, blending in with the people he’s around while the zookeeper attempts to catch him. the story’s end is a feel-good one. ramona cannot get enough.

what books are your favorite to read with your little one?

We’re on our 3rd neighborhood DPL. Both of my boys have grown up in them (we’re weekly dwellers), and now that they are getting older and forming their own relationships with the librarians and other library “regulars”, it’s just lovely to watch. I am so grateful for this amazing system we have.

Rattletrap Car is our most checked out book. You’d think by now I’d have bought our own copy, but there’s something about that crinkly plastic library cover!

    Adorable post!

oooh, i’m going to look for that book. We’re avid Boulder Library goers, and “Who Says Moo?” always seems to find it’s way into our bag. Also lovers of:
    Down by the Station
    Along a Long Road
    all Curious George Books

  3. I’m totally guilty of picking out children’s books for Levi based on their covers! We’re going to the library after nap time — will look for this book 🙂

I don’t have a little one but when I buy books as gifts, I either get one from the “Pigeon” series, such as “The Pigeon Has Feelings Too” or for a bit older child I give “How Do You Feed A Hungry Giant?” which was illustrated by local (Denver) illustrator Shaw Nielsen.

My daughter, Penelope, is currently obsessed with “Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type,” “I Want My Hat Back,” “Mr. Pine’s Purple House,” and “The Giving Tree.” She is 22 months old and super into reading, going to the library. If beautiful art is what you are looking for, the illustrations in “Caps For Sale” are really really lovely.
