my aunt ruth and her family live on about 45 acres in a little town called shelbyville, a 30 minute drive outside of louisville, kentucky. on their land they have you-pick-it organic blueberry patch (have you ever eaten blueberries, right off the bush, warm from the sun?! i have. it’s amazing).
they also tap the maple the trees on their property and reduce the sap into the most amazing maple syrup you have ever tasted in your life. seriously, vermont has nothing on them. our most decadent and treasured christmas gift this year was a bottle of that sticky gold. we hoard it and measure it out and make sure not to waste one drop. it only comes out on special occasions.
jonathan and i spent a lazy sunday morning making and eating and relishing some cornmeal raspberry pancakes. i eat mine (at least the first one) with plain yogurt, crunchy peanut butter, homemade granola and syrup on top. jonathan doesn’t mess around w all the accoutrements and goes right for the gold.
if you’re ever in louisville at the right season (and you should go sometime, as it is one fun town) make sure you check out their blueberry patch! they also live a couple miles down the road from the smith-berry winery, the winery of the daughter of wendell berry (jonathan’s and my favorite author).

    Emily,
I love the way you write because you draw me right in to the story. I'm currently eating blueberries on your aunt's farm!

Sounds amazing- there is nothing like real maple syrup.
